Dogtown and Z-Boys is an enjoyable documentary about skateboarding. More importantly, it is a film that explores the skateboard movement and those individuals who led the way. The Z-boys (Zephyr Boys) were a group of 12 individuals - 11 boys, one girl. Dogtown was their dirty, filthy paradise; the last great "seaside slum". It was a territory encompassing three beach communities: south Santa Monica, Venice, and Ocean Park. Dogtown and Z-Boys is masterfully directed by Stacy Peralta, an original Z-Boy, and a legend of the sport. With the help of his editor Paul Crowder, and set to the classic rock anthems by the likes of Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin, and Black Sabbath, Peralta's documentary depicts the evolution of skateboarding through reflections and experiences.
